Unravel the secrets of Raku, a 16th-century fast-firing technique. In the workshop, you’ll learn what makes this low-fire process so unique through the manipulation of the atmosphere around the clay piece.
Here’s what you can expect:
The firing fee is $40, which includes glazes, propane, and the firing of 5 pieces. Feel free to bring an extra piece just in case there’s room in the kiln (we love full loads!).
- If you don’t have pieces or are a ceramics beginner, no worries! Please let us know in advance, and we can often supply you with “forgotten” bisque pieces from other workshops.
- You’ll get to glaze your pieces and manage the reduction chambers. Glazes are mixed in-house and available to workshop participants. You can see examples of results. Feel free to bring your own glazes, but make sure they’re specific to the cone 05 temperature and raku atmosphere.
Please bring:
- Your 5-6 bisqued pieces to fire; “large-mug” or “small vase” size is ideal. Tall vase cylinders have given the best results (wide bowl shapes usually crack unless they have a lot of grog).
- We’ll provide glazes and brushes. Feel free to bring your brushes if you like.
- Sensible attire for being around an open fire: closed-toed shoes, hair tied back, and no loose clothing.
- A snack, a beverage, and some shop talk! The firings usually end around noon, as we typically have enough people for two firings, each lasting about an hour.
Thank you! We can’t wait to have you join us for the Raku Workshop!
